Welcome

Welcome. Who We Are:
line
We are Safe Kids in the OC, a campaign team from California State University, Fullerton working with Safekids.org, and its local affiliate Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC), with a mission to prevent injury and save the lives of children in our community.

What is our goal?
line
Our goal is simply to save lives and protect the children of Orange County from injury, by increasing awareness of the need for better car safety practices by parents and their children. Specific objectives include:
  • Making parents more aware of an increasing rate of injury to children from improperly used seat belts and/or car seats
  • Getting children to be more aware of the need for them to wear safety belts properly
  • To get children ages 11 to 14 to take a more active role in their safety and the safety of their siblings.
  • Making African American and Hispanic parents more aware of the need to properly use car safety restraints and/or place children in the back seat.

Why are we doing this?
line
Studies show that many children are still being injured and killed because they are still not using safety belts and/or car seats, and/or they are not the restraints properly.
  • Most parents think that their child’s car seat/booster is properly installed in the vehicle, when studies reveal the harsh reality that they are not.
  • Statistics show there has been an increase in deaths and injuries due to improper seat belt usage.
  • African American children ages 4-7 have the lowest restraint use among children ages 4 to 7, an estimated 26 percent are not restrained while riding in a motor vehicle, and Hispanic children are also much more likely to be injured than Caucasian children because they are improperly restrained.

What are we doing to prevent injury and save lives?
line
As a team, we are reaching out and interactively engaging parents and children to awaken them to the dangers of improper used seat belts and safety restraints. Research shows that parents don’t realize that they are not restraining their children properly, which means they will often ignore advertising because they think that they are using them properly. Our approach is to reach out through a mix of events, PSA’s, and programs through schools and community organizations.

How can you help?
line
  1. For the parents, make sure you know what’s going in your back seat. Check your child.
  2. For the kids, it’s time that YOU talk back. Tell your younger brothers and sister to buckle-up.
  3. “Know your role” in the practice of proper car safety usage.

The POWER of a Car Seat
She died, but her 10-month-old son survived. CHP said that it was the properly installed car seat that saved the baby’s life.

“Natalie Canton, 21, of Chino was pronounced dead at the scene of Thursday's crash that occurred about 2 p.m. as she lost control of her black Acura Integra while going from the eastbound lanes of the Riverside (91) Freeway to the northbound Orange (57) Freeway, said California Highway Patrol Officer Katrina Lundgren.
The car fell about 100 feet, striking the ground on…"
